This homeowner contacted DryZone knowing that they had an issue under their home in their crawl space. They lived in their home for 15 years and they knew the amount of moisture in the air was causing the insulation to fall onto the ground. They did not realize that this could also cause mold to grow. When foundations settle, they sink into the ground below them. When this happens, it typically occurs unevenly and one side can settle faster than another side. As a result, openings can form between foundation bricks and sill plates. The opening that is created allows air to enter the crawl space. Air entering a crawl space is full of moisture and actually attaches to insulation, causing it to become heavy and fall down. This moisture can also feed microbial growth that clings to wooden joists. DryZone suggested a full clean of fiberglass insulation as well as sealing those gaps between the foundation and sill plate.

After taking a look through a minor cut in the dry wall, we noticed the crack ran both north and south. Because of this, we had to cut out any drywall that was in the path.   Once all of the drywall was cut back, we used FlexiSpan to fill and seal the crack. FlexiSpan is a three-part process that begins with the application of a flexible sealant along the full length of the crack. Next, a strip of flexible and porous foam is installed over the crack.   Finally, an impermeable membrane is adhered to the wall on both sides of the foam strip. This fail-safe treatment allows any future seepage of water through the crack to move invisibly down the wall and into the basement’s perimeter drainage system.
