Choose the right contractor and avoid regrets later.

There are a lot of things we like to do for ourselves around the house. Most people can unclog a drain, replace a broken faucet, or repair a hole in the bedroom wall. Its these kinds of smaller jobs that often give us the confidence to try and tackle a major remodeling project on our own.

All too often we see homeowners that had great visions of how their basement would look once they got through with it only to find out just how much time and effort it would take to get there. When handling major projects, its really best to leave things to the professionals. Now the question remains, what makes someone a professional? There are a few things that every homeowner should look and even ask for when looking at starting any home remodeling project.

-What is your license number?

-How many of these kinds of projects have you finished?

-How long will the job take?

-Will you have to hire any subcontractors or will all the people be your employees?

-Will I need a permit for building, electric, plumbing, etc.?

These are all excellent questions to ask your potential contractor. Try to remember its not just about what they answer but also how they answer.  Be sure to check them out with the Better Business Bureau, and other third party agencies. Trust your instincts, if they say things like “we can get away with that” or “we might not need a permit,” then chances are they are not the most reputable. Hiring subcontractors is not necessarily a negative thing, however it is nice to not have to deal with more than one company. It is also important to remember that almost every project needs a permit. It is not worth it to try and sneak one by the inspectors. All it takes is one neighbor to make a phone call to the zoning office and they could delay or even stop your project all together.

At the end of the day, its all about comfort. That means that you needs to be comfortable with your company, your materials, and when its all done, you need to be comfortable in your new finished space.
