Use the Protimeter Mini to Determine Basement Water Levels

The Protimeter Mini is a handheld device that we use to check water levels in the joists beams of a home or building. If the water levels are too high then we know that that’s not a good sign; however, even if levels are low, it can still be a reason for concern. We use this device every time

we go under a home to inspect it. This also helps give the customer a better understanding of what’s really going on underneath of their home.

After measuring the water levels in each part of the crawl space, we found that the deeper into the crawl space, the higher the levels were, which was the complete opposite of what we had expected to find. The reason for the levels being higher toward the back of the crawl space, is that once the water traveled to the back, it got stuck, because it had nowhere else to go.

Once we finished our inspection, we discussed our findings with the homeowner, telling how the Protimeter Mini showed such high water levels in the beams, meaning that this is what was causing mold to grow and was also creating the musty smell. The homeowner was very shocked to see the levels, having no idea how bad the water problem was.

We carefully cleaned the entire crawl space. This then allowed us to install new joist beams, replace the old insulation, and install a CleanSpace crawl space liner. Finally we installed a sump pump and dehumidifer to keep the space dry and free of any moisture.
