Newark, DE Sinking bridge becomes unsafe

Helical piers on Newark bridge

A property management company recently called us to repair an entrance bridge into one of its developments in Newark, DE. The bridge was sinking and was becoming a hazard to drive on. The company was thinking about just tearing it down and rebuilding. The problem there is that the concrete wasn’t failing, it was the dirt under the bridge that was failing. When dirt settles it absorbs the weight of whatever is resting on top of it. So, in theory, if you add more concrete in an effort to level or strengthen things you are actually making things worse.

After our installers assessed the structure, they made a plan of attack. They began by digging up the side of the bridge that was settling. Then they rolled in on the mini excavator with the drive head attached. The helical pier system was ideal for this situation because they are driven in mechanically and require very little weight to push down on the pier.  Brackets were then placed under the footer of the bridge and the piers were attached. We were able to lift the bridge back into place and it is now strong and secure.

The company was amazed at the results. They were able to get the problem fixed in a fraction of the time and it actually came in under budget. Just goes to show that when it comes to fixing complex problems like foundation repair, it's best to leave it to a specialist like Foundation Supportworks by DryZone.
