In this important segment, Bill and Derek explain water and humidity in basements and crawl spaces. Why are these areas typically so damp? Why are they so prone to water intrusion?
They explain how air retains humidity when hot and releases it when it cools down, and how differences in temperature between the outside air and the crawl space or basement can lead to high relative humidity levels, condensation and related problems.
Water is always bad news for foundations. High humidity and water intrusion from poor foundation drainage lead to mold growth, which impacts health and indoor air quality.
It can also lead to more serious structural damage such as wood decay, foundation settlement and cracks and bowing walls.
